The displacement of bonding pair of electron towards more electronegative atom or group of atom in an organic compound inducing polarity in the molecule is called inductive effect. It is represented by the symbol āIā. It is permanent effect, it is not confined to only one c-atom and transmitted along the c-atom in c-chain which is shown by arrow (ā) pointing towards the direction of electron displaced. It is of two types:
- Positive inductive effect/ +I effect
- Negative inductive effect/ -I effect
