Britain Plunges Into Darkness For Century of World War I

On the eve of the first World War, Foreign Secretary Sir Edward Grey said 100 years ago”The lamps are going out all over Europe; we shall not see them lit again in our lifetime.” It was the centenary of the great war which changed the lives of many people forever and the landscape of many places were never the same again. The Britains commemorated the Century of The First World War by turning off all the lights of UK and turning into darkness for an hour, on Monday.

The Lights Out event indicates the 100 years after the Britain participated in The World War in Aug. 4 1914. This disastrous event took lives of million of innocent people and damaged everything, thus making it the most deadliest and horrifying event in the human history. The tragic horrifying event killed millions of people and ruined many lives and created a war between countries which created a terrifying history that everyone wants to forget.

The Royal British Legion, a charity that supports veterans and their families, requested the people to leave just one light or candle on in their houses between 10 p.m. and 11 p.m. GMT. The people did what they requested, and with the participation of all the people, the organization was able to lit about a million candles all over the country. The one million candles were lit for remembering the British men and women who sacrificed their lives or got killed in the World War.

The Legion’s Fundraising Director Charles Byrne told the BBC that the initiative aimed to pass on the torch of the past generation to the future generation to ensure their legacy and their contribution towards the country and also remembering the sacrifice of their today for the betterment of our tomorrow.

The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge (Prince William and Kate Middleton), Prince Harry and Prime Minister David Cameron attended a twilight ceremony at St. Symphorien Military Cemetery in Belgium, while Prince Charles attended a service in Glasgow.
