More AstraZeneca doses arrive from Japan

The Japanese government delivered 333,900 doses a day after delivering 513,420 doses as part of the 1.6 million doses guaranteed for Nepal under COVAX.

On Sunday, Japan delivered a another 333,900 doses of AstraZeneca vaccine to Nepal.

This is part of the 1.6 million doses committed by the Japanese government under the COVAX facility, a UN-backed worldwide vaccine-sharing scheme.

The Health Ministry’s secretary, Dr Roshan Pokhrel, told the Post, “We received a second cargo of AstraZeneca vaccine from Japan today.”

333,900 doses of vaccination arrived on Sunday evening, according to Upendra Dhungana, chief of the Department of Health Services’ Logistic Management Section.

513,420 doses of AstraZeneca vaccine arrived from Japan on Saturday, following the arrival of 230,000 doses of the same vaccine from Bhutan the day before.

Starting Monday, the government will begin distributing the vaccine to the 1.4 million people aged 65 and up who received their first doses of AstraZeneca vaccine in the second week of March.

Nepal has already received 10,860,170 doses of vaccine from various sources, bringing the total number of doses received to 10,860,170.

Nepal began its immunization campaign in January with the gift from the Indian government of 1 million doses of Covishield, an AstraZeneca type vaccine developed by the Serum Institute of India.

Only 1 million doses of the 2 million medicines Nepal purchased from the Serum Institute were shipped.

To date, Nepal has employed Covishield, Vero Cell, which was created and manufactured by Sinopharm in China, and Janssen, which was developed and manufactured by Johnson & Johnson, to inoculate its people against Covid-19

Nepal purchased 4 million Vero Cell doses from China, while the Chinese government supplied 1.8 million doses as a donation.

The US gave 1,534,850 doses of Janssen through the COVAX facility on July 12.On March 7, COVAX delivered 348,000 doses of Covishield to Nepal.

The government has announced a plan to obtain 42 million doses of Covid-19 vaccine by February of next year, with all eligible residents over the age of 12 being inoculated by mid-April.

As of Sunday, 4,494,269 people (about 14.98 percent) had received their initial doses, and 2,492,182 people had been fully vaccinated (around 8.3 percent).
