The 300th birthday of King Prithvinarayan Shah is being commemorated today around the country with a variety of events. Every year on Poush 27 of the lunar calendar, the event is commemorated.
King Narabhupal Shah and Queen Kaushalyavati gave birth to Prithvinarayan Shah on 27 Poush 1779 BS at Gorkha. On Chaitra 25, 1799 BS, Prithvinarayan was crowned King.
Nepal was previously divided into 52 principalities. After becoming king, Prithvinarayan was successful in extending Nepal’s border from Tista in the east to the Chepe River in the west.
Following Prithvinarayan’s death, his successors worked to expand Nepal’s state to the fort of Kangada in the west.
In 1801 BS, Prithvinarayan Shah captured Nuwakot. He conquered the Kathmandu Valley twenty-five years later, in 1826 BS. Prithivinarayan Shah expanded the country’s limits after conquering the Nepal Valley.
Prithvinarayan Shah’s 300th birthday is being commemorated today with a variety of events taking place all throughout the country.
Various programs have been planned for the occasion by Nepal Pragya Pratisthan, Nepal Lalit Kala Pratisthan, Nepal Sangeet and Natya Pragya Pratisthan, and Cultural Undertaking.
Similarly, other organizations are holding events across the country to commemorate Prithivi Jayanti and National Unity Day.
