Department of Education, Nepal directed PABSON and NPABSON to not take send up exams from now and to follow.
According to the regulations, students who are studying in grade 10 and have at least 70 percent attendance cannot be barred from the SLC exam. The Central Fee Fixation and Monitoring Committee (CFFMC) will submit a detailed report within a month.
The Central Fee Fixation and Monitoring Committee (CFFMC) led by Department of Education Director General Lava Deo Awasthi has directed private schools to cancel the School Leaving Certificate send-up exams scheduled for next month.
Openly challenging the existing legal provision, Private and Boarding Schools’ Organisation Nepal (Pabson) last week published the exam timetable for all the grade 10 students from schools affiliated to it. Though Education Regulations (Sixth Amendment, 2011) bars schools from holding send-up exams to select students for SLC, private schools have been holding the test to pick excellent students for good results which they often use to attract students.
“The committee has asked private schools to stop the illegal exams,” said Awasthi, adding that the decision was made in consensus with PABSON representatives. The CFFMC has representation from PABSON, National Pabsan and guardians’ associations apart from the Education Department.
The committee, however, permits individual schools to hold internal exams for SLC preparation. According to the regulations, students who are studying in grade 10 and have at least 70 percent attendance cannot be barred from the SLC exam. Schools that bar students from taking SLC exams citing test results are liable to a fine of Rs 25,000 and other actions from the respective District Education Office.
The CFFMC also has decided to form an eight-member committee led by Education Department Deputy Director Ram Sharan Sapkota to recommend on various issues including fee hike, school categorisation and scholarships. The committee has got a month to submit a detailed report.
