The first block of the Chitwan National Park and Parsa National Park complex has completed its tiger census.
Under the first block of the National Tiger Census 2078 BS, the count was conducted in Triveni, Chormara, Nawalpur, Kasara, Sauraha, and Barandabhar. The count was done by placing cameras in various locations.
The census cameras were removed when the operation was completed, according to CNP’s chief conservation officer Haribhadra Acharya.
“The job of removing the cameras that were installed to conduct the first block census has been completed. In the second block, cameras have been installed for census purposes.
It would be undertaken during the day today”, he shared.
In the first block, up to 100 enumerators were mobilized for the census. In the first block, he said, census camps were built in 13 different locations, with 6-8 enumerators and technologists mobilized in each camp.
Under the second block, the census will be conducted in the eastern portion of Sauraha to eastern Chitwan, the eastern half of Madi, and Thori to Sikaribas, according to Acharya.
To conduct the census, the block would be divided into 290 grids. For this objective, up to 580 automated cameras would be employed.
This year’s census will be conducted utilizing the camera trapping method.
Ganesh Prasad Tiwari, Assistant Conservation Officer and Information Officer at CNP, said the camps have been placed up near the Nepal Army battalion, which is in charge of maintaining national park security.
He explained that high-level security measures had been implemented to prevent any adverse incidents during the census.
In the second block, the census would be conducted tentatively in 22 days, he said. He further stated that once the census in the second block is completed, the census in the third block will begin.
Up to Rautahat, cameras would be put in the remaining areas of Parsa and the forest region. In third block, the same human resource would be mobilized for the census.
The tiger census in CNP and Parsa National Park Complex would take at least three months to complete.
The census will be conducted using equipment such as a camera trap, range finder, GPS, and a record firm, according to Information Officer Tiwari.
