In a siphon, water is lifted above its original level during its flow from one container to another, where does it get the needed potential energy from?
Ans:
Siphon is an arrangement by which a liquid can be transferred from a vessel (V1) at higher level to a vessel (V2) at a lower level without disturbing the positions of vessels. One closed end of a bent tube filled with liquid is dipped in the vessel V1 and other end in the vessel V2 as shown in the figure. When the closed end is opened, the liquid starts flowing from the vessel V1 to V2 due to pressure difference between A and C. On account of this pressure difference, the liquid gets the needed potential energy.
