The splitting of heavy nucleus into lighter nuclei of comparable masses along with the release of energy is known as nuclear fission. Nuclear fission can be illustrated by a simple nuclear reaction eg: when uranium is bombarded by neutron it splits into lighter nuclei Barium and Krypton.
