Introduction to Cold War

The term “Cold War” refers to the non‐military hostility between the United States of America (USA) and the former Soviet Union. The tension and rivalry between the USA and the USSR is described as the Cold War (1945 ‐ 1990).

There was never a real war between the two sides between 1945 and 1990, but they were often very close to war.

Cold War comprised not only superpowers’ confrontations but confrontations between two blocs of states: the United States, with Canada, Australia, and much of Western Europe (allied in the North Atlantic Treaty Organization, or NATO); and the Soviet Union, with its Warsaw Pact allies in Eastern Europe.
